This monument owes its existence to the day in May 1980 when Mount St. Helens erupted, laying waste to the surrounding forest. Visitors witness the rebirth of a forest through interpretive programs and tours. 110,000 acres [44,515.4 hectares]. Facilities: hiking, bicycling, climbing (reservations required), fishing, hunting, picnic areas, scenic drives, winter sports, handicapped access. Open year-round, but winter snows close many roads.
